Gus, Labrador Retriever For Adoption In Cleveland, Georgia

Price:

Location:
Cleveland, GA
Description:

Meet GusGus is the face of second chances. He was surrendered to us completely unsocialized and terrified. He had had little to no human interaction. Gus’s mama is a purebred chocolate lab. His daddy was a wandering opportunist. And Gus was just another unwanted mix breed puppy. But our intake coordinator saw something in this sweet and terrified young puppy and welcomed him in. If not for our shelter, where would he go? What chance would he have? Gus got lucky. Gus is about a year old now. He’s been quite a project, but months of patience and consistency have paid off. His transformation is nothing short of a miracle. When he first arrived, Gus had to be carried to his kennel. He was shut down, afraid to look at anyone and completely petrified. But Gus is smart, and our staff and volunteers are that good. After months of talking with him quietly and giving him treats, and letting him decompress and observe his surroundings, Gus started to understand that he was safe. Gus watched how we treated our other dogs, taking them in and out of kennels, walking them, petting their heads and being gentle with them. He decided to begin trusting us and we could see his demeanor change. He started letting us work with him. We first introduced him to leash walking. It did not go well LOL. Gus would alligator roll to get away and fight the leash. But with consistency and treats and a lot of patience, Gus finally got it. He’s now a great leash walker, walking for our staff and volunteers and even a little eager to get going. Gus then started feeling comfortable enough to go into our play yards. Where once he wouldn’t leave his kennel, he loves the yard. He loves the fresh air, the grass, the space and the chance to greet the other dogs out there. Gus is dog friendly and will do well with another dog in the home. Gus will love a doggie friend to play with and show him the ropes. We’re also teaching Gus commands to build his confidence. He’s quickly picked them up. Gus is thriving with so much attention. He loves it and every day he becomes a happier, more outgoing, friendly, and confident young pup. Gus even likes traveling in the car and he did great at the vet for his check-up. Gus has gone from being a completely shut down and terrified young dog, to a brave, friendly, gentle, earnest, loving, smart, wonderful dog. Gus is going to make for a fantastic family companion. He’s ready to find his furever home. If interested in welcoming Gus to your heart and home and showing him what a loving home feels like, please fill out an application https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application Once an application is submitted online, you will receive an email saying your application has been successfully received. If you don’t receive this email within 24 hours, please check to make sure all application fields were completed or please email us at XXXX@windstream.net. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with a current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. The facility usually operates at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.Adoptions and meet and greets are scheduled by appointment only. Location: 4823 Helen Hwy., Sautee, GA 30571, Phone: 706-865-XXXXEmail: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.netAdoption processOur adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.107374XXXX.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . For cat application, go to: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.107374XXXX.548822128495391/1271223856255211/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: XXXX@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention.
