Adopt Alfie a Tan/Yellow/Fawn Cocker Spaniel / Mixed dog in Vienna

Vienna, VA

Meet Alfie, the sweet Cocker Spaniel we rescued earlier this year. This poor pup was left sitting outside in a rusty crate with no bottom, suffering through intense cold and rainy weather of winter, and was so matted and covered in mud we were initially uncertain of his gender. He had no food, water, or shelter and had been outside for days. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan was watching and stopped to talk with the residents who claimed they found him and offered to surrender him. He was in Worthy Dog’s custody the very same day. We knew immediately that Alfie was pure sweetness. He was clearly in some pain but was just happy to have some love and attention. He had a gash above his eye, cataracts, inflamed paws, and was a little gimpy from arthritis in his knees. He had been neglected in every way and needed A LOT of medical care and TLC to get him where he is today. Outside of all the routine vet care we do (shots, neuter, microchip), Alfie has also had surgery to remove a tumor that had been ignored for years and saw an Oncologist for follow-up care. He’s been treated for ear infections and multiple UTI’s, had many x-rays, multiple blood panels, urinalysis, fluorescein stain and tear tests, and a full body ultrasound. He sees a holistic vet for bi-weekly acupuncture treatments and is taking supplements to address inflammation, which was causing recurring stomach and incontinence issues. We’ve also transitioned him from kibble to a packaged “real food” diet, and he’s flourishing. Alfie was lucky to be fostered by Malathy & Evan, who tend to take on our medical case pups. Malathy is a doctor who is very attentive and does copious research to figure out the right approach for her foster. He’s come such a long way in their care, and we have seen a joyous Alfie emerge with a lot more energy. He loves to play with people and other dogs, enjoys chewing on stuffed toys until he falls asleep, and loves to chase balls, even though he has limited vision. Alfie can see but has cataracts and challenges navigating low-light or dark areas. We think he is nearly deaf, but it really doesn’t seem to bother him. He’s is not impacted by the sounds of fireworks or storms, and just does his thing. He’s always ready to go and do, and is great in the car as well as the canoe! Socially, Alfie loves everyone — cats, dogs, men, women, and kids too. He is a happy, easy-going dog who adapts quickly. He eats well, is cooperative for baths, vet visits, and meds, and knows to go potty outside but has some intermittent accidents. He still wears a belly band regularly but can go days without an accident. So far this week, Alfie’s had no potty issues overnight, so we continue to see improvement. He sleeps in his crate at night with the door open and doesn’t make a peep until you wake him. His foster home has a doggie door that allows Alfie to come and go as needed, and that’s been very helpful. We are looking for a loving owner who will be attentive to Alfie’s daily care, keep up with his diet and supplement needs, and continue his acupuncture treatments and regular checkups. Someone who has the resources and time to spend with him and can appreciate what a special, gentle soul he is. We would like Alfie to have a dog or cat buddy in his new home for companionship, and only older kids are preferred.
