There's nothing quite like puppy sweetness and silliness...and then they put their beautiful heads quietly on your shoulder breathing their warm breath. These gorgeous puppies are so pure and vulnerable, with their whole lives lying in front of them, that it's unbearable to think of them homeless and alone or in a high-kill shelter scheduled for euthanasia. Barley is a cuter than cute 12 week old, 5 lb Poodle /Shih Tzu mix (anticipated full grown weight is approximately 15 lbs). Farfel's can't swear to the accuracy of this breed mix as no DNA test was done. This was the opinion of Texas vets and we're going with their educated guess. Barley is starting out with great energy. While initially shy, this sweet puppy is blossoming in his foster home as he learns about living in a safe and nurturing environment with love and kindness . Now at 12 weeks old, while still just a bit shy, Barley's self esteem is getting better each day as he learns that he's a very valuable guy that has so much to offer a dog-loving family. The photo of Barley is awful. There's no way that it shows how adorable and fluffy this sweet boy is. We've requested new photos from Barley's Texas foster and will update as soon as we receive them. Barley's non-shedding coat (perfect for those with allergy concerns) is currently shelter-sad. This gorgeous guy's forever family will need to make a lifelong commitment to periodic grooming (approximately once every 8 - 10 weeks) and excellent nutrition. 5 star food and a daily salmon oil supplement are perfect lifelong protocols for general longevity and coat care to keep Barley's hair super-healthy, shining and as soft as cotton. Barley is appropriately playful and inquisitive for his young age. He's also so loving and cuddly once he's comfortable in his environment. This snuggly little guy would be very excited to be a couch potato and snuggle with his favorite people at the end of an active day. Even at just 12 weeks old, it's clear that this puppy is SO smart and very sweet - typical of the Poodle and ShihTzu personalities. Many would say these two breeds are the most loyal, intelligent and intuitive in the dog world. Since Barley is just a puppy, he's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show him the way. He has all the potential in the world to be an awesome adult companion. Sweet Barley will form firm bonds with his family and learn positive socialization skills through virtual or in-person positive reinforcement / force-free puppy kindergarten followed by force-free level 1 Obedience Classes. These classes will make a profound difference in a puppy's ultimate behavior and in his relationship / bonding with his people. It does take time and commitment yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you out in the world with excellent behavior. Farfel's Rescue feels very strongly that every dog deserves the opportunity for formal, positive reinforcement / force-free training classes. We therefore aren't willing to adopt Barley out to a home that doesn't choose to offer him this training opportunity. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of approved virtual and in-person positive reinforcement / force-free trainers in your area. We're open to Barley finding his forever home with a retired couple or individual with lots of energy to train and enjoy a silly and super-smart puppy. A younger family that works from a home-based office would also be a great choice for a puppy that would love nothing more than getting loved up periodically throughout the day. Barley enjoys his relationships with all humans and dogs. We would prefer, however, to place him in a home with older kids (tail pulling or rough treatment will create an adult dog that's fearful of children). Older kids can also be active participants in a training regimen and friendship that's so important in a dog's development. Barley will be up to date on his vetting/vaccinations to be in line with our commitment to only adopting out healthy dogs. Extensive new research shows that Barley is far too young to be neutered at this time. When he's approximately 12 months old, Farfel's is happy to cover all costs for Barley's neuter and microchip if one of our rescue vets is used.
