Introducing Marvelous Merlin, our 4-month-old (DOB 11/23/2023) sweetheart of a pup! How adorable is he? Very, but don't let his sweet looks fool you; he is Husky through and through. Let's start with all his really good qualities. He is an absolute love; he is playful and very cuddly. He loves belly rubs and attention. He even considers himself a bit of a lapdog. He is funny and a "sass master." He likes the company of other dogs and is a good playmate. He can get a little nippy and annoying like a little brother, but he is easily redirected back to acceptable play. Of course, his furry foster family also shows him acceptable play. He is quick to learn and is good about adhering to house rules. He should also be an easy one to train new commands and tricks. He also has a pretty good "off" switch when it's time to relax. Now, things Merlin needs to work on. He's timid of new people. We have no idea why he is this fearful as he and his littermates all came to us like this and have only been in foster homes for a short time. They need slow, calm, gentle introductions to any new person they may meet. Thankfully, once they are comfortable, which doesn't take long, they want to be your forever friend, and their personalities emerge. Merlin's foster Mom has been working with him on meeting new people and socializing with them as much as possible, and he's getting better every day! Pooping. Merlin likes to poo where he likes to poo, and it's usually on the deck and raised beds at his foster home. The foster family is working on redirecting him to appropriate voiding places, and he gets tons of praise when he complies. He does not void in the house. Just strange places outdoors. He also wants to be a digger. He's just testing the waters on that activity, but he'll need to be monitored so it doesn't develop into a bad habit. He has shown some possible signs of separation anxiety, but he's doing well with the company of other dogs, so we are hopeful we are misreading him on this. So the long and short of Marvelous Merlin's perfect home, according to his foster Mom, is..... Merlin is one of the smartest dogs I've encountered in my life. He will be an amazing dog in the right home or an absolute troublemaker in the wrong one. His perfect home will offer structure, mental and physical exercise, and, ideally, another dog friend to play with. (A tolerant one because he likes to chomp on tails.) We recommend a home with Husky/Northern experience so Merlin gets someone who will love and appreciate him for his breed. Someone who understands and accepts true Husky behavior and knows how to deal with it.
