Athena T. German Shepherd Dog Senior Female

San Juan Bautista, CA

Athena T. is a lovable andaffectionate senior German Shepherd that was picked up as a stray and has been at the Clovis City Shelter for about three weeks. She knows her basic commands (see included video) and her shelter handlers were quick to point out that she especially enjoys getting a belly rub. Even though she did arrive at the shelter as a stray it seems clear that she must have been a dog that was loved and cared for during most of her life. Some time ago Athenahad aproblem with her left eye and it had to be surgicallyremoved. She has recovered nicely from this procedure but itshows us that her prior owner was willing to gothrough nice expense for her well being. AthenaT. Summary:-Athenais a Female, 9yrs old, weighs 80 pounds, current on shots, house-trained, spayed- Good with Adults, dogs, and travel in the carSurprisingly, most dogs are quick to adapt to losing their sight in 1 eye. Many are also are able to adjust well to losing their sight completely. We don't anticipatethis for Athena but she does show some impairment in her remaining eye. TSGSRhad our Veterinarian examine this eye and it was determined to be atreatable case of dry-eye syndrome. She will need eye drops for this condition most likely for the rest of her life but Athena's new adoptive owners can rest assuredthat Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) will cover these medical costs.Athena is very strong and physically capable for her age of nine years. Wehave already learned that squirrels around her initial foster home should think twice before hanging outon the ground between trees. She is alert, quick, and all muscle. We found Athena to interact nicely with other dogs. She prefers calm dogs and at times can be a bitcautious until she knows the other dog. For cases where she has run into snarkydogs,we have observed her to just imply wagher tail, turn away, then moveon. Athena does seem to enjoy going for walks on a leash however she mayneed some additional practice in this area. She will attempt to pull a bit on the leash to influence where the walk is headed. Her new adopter may find it useful to take an obedience class with her even though she knows basic commands. Such a class provides a good framework for the adopter and the canine to bond and begin to walk as a unit. Daily walks with mild and consistent corrections as needed are also very helpful.Onher transport trip from Clovis to Thulani Central (headquarters for TSGSRin N. Cal) she traveled calmly in her transport crate. It seemed that she might be an experienced traveler. As we approached the rear hatch of our SUV Athena seemed to know what was next. She crouched down and was preparing to jump right in. We suspect nobody told her that she was a senior dog and that she should exercise caution when attempting such leaps... but we were looking out for her and as she positioned herself to take offwe were ready to provide a precautionaryboost just because it WAS quite a leap. Athena settled down in the crate quickly and mostly rested for the trip. Along with traveling well in a crate we were also advised that she is indeed crate trained so we expect that she would be perfectly adjusted to being fed or spending short periods in her crate without feeling like she was being punished. We are still getting to know Athenaso we will be continuing to update herbio. As we learn more about her we will be including her updates here in her bio. What's Next for Athena T.:Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR)will continue to see that Athena is well cared for and receives all medical care needed for herwell being. In addition, TSGSR is beginninga search for an adoptive home that will care for herfor the rest of herlife. Athena willcome to hernew home with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.Athenas medical expenses will be covered for the rest of herlife by Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR)!If you want to learn more about Athena, or are possibly interested in providing an adoptive or foster home, please send us a message by clicking on the "Ask About Me" button. If you are reading about Athena on Petfindercom.comsometimes an available YouTube video is not listed.
