Available - Pluto English Setter Young Male
Pine Grove, PA
Socialization/training: Pluto is a very friendly boy who gets along with everyone he’s met (human and canine). He’s somewhat more hesitant with men but warms up quickly. Pluto takes treats very gently, even when there are other dogs around, and has shown no signs of resource guarding. He comes reliably when called when loose in the fenced backyard with his foster sisters and is picking up basic commands (sit, down and wait) quickly. He’s really much more interested in being with people than dogs. Pluto was a complete gentleman at the vet’s, laying calmly on the floor or standing when asked; they even offered to provide a recommendation, he was so good! He stayed at the boarding kennel (1 night) and was groomed (bath, nails and clipped the inside of his ears) by the staff there. Their comments were similar, he’s a little shy but calm and friendly, did well in group play, but preferred hanging out with the humans.Crate trained: Yes, he sleeps in his crate at night and when I can’t directly supervise him. I haven’t given him free access to the house yet only because we weren’t sure of his housetraining. He hasn’t had any accidents in the house or crate and has recently learned to use the dog door.Leash trained: He walks nicely on a leash, doesn’t heel but doesn’t pull. A gentle tug brings him right back and he hasn’t tried to lunge or chase after birds, squirrels or people. He is a little nervous about loud vehicles and playing children but just stops and watches them.Activity Level: Laid back, especially for a young dog. He likes to roll in the grass and trot around the yard. He will occasionally engage in a short game of chase or play with his foster sisters. He definitely prefers being out when it’s cooler so may gain a bit more pep as the weather cools.Fence: Pluto should do fine with regular walks. He hasn’t shown any inclination to dig or challenge the fence. A fenced yard would be nice but isn’t a requirement. Behavior: Pluto is very attentive. He really just wants to hang out with people and if they’re petting him that’s just the icing on the cake. Once he’s comfortable he likes belly rubs and ear scratches. He’ll stay with you as long as you’re petting him but will go lie down nearby if you ask him to. So far he hasn’t shown any interest in toys but he does enjoy chewing on real bones or other chews. He’s so laid back that he let one of his foster sisters just take the bone he was chewing on. He enjoys hanging out on the doggy hammock or curling up on a dog bed. If allowed, I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to take over the couch or bed and cuddle up!Medical History: He had some mats that had to be cut out and some associated hotspots as well as a few minor wounds but everything is healing up nicely. He was slightly underweight when he arrived but has put on weight and a good weight for him should be 65-70 lbs. He has not had any dietary issues. Pluto is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and on monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. Foster Comments: Pluto is a super sweet boy who would be happy as an only dog or as part of a pack as long as he gets some one-on-one attention. All he wants is a person or family of his own.Foster Location: Charlottesville, VirginiaVolunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
