Description:

Meet Avery... This sensitive boy will turn 2 in September and is ready to find his forever home, with a dog savvy adopter. He is a terrier blend weighing 16 lbs. We suspect this poor guy spent the first part of his life with little to no human interaction, so he is still learning the pleasures of being pet and loved. In addition to owning or working with a rescue pup before, he will need someone who is loving, patient and understanding of his needs. General Behavior: Avery is generally very happy and will spend most of his day playing with dog toys while wagging his tail. He has been in loving foster homes for several months and has come a LONG way. He does get separation anxiety and wants to be close to his human, even if he doesn’t fully trust yet. Some days his foster mom can touch him, but most days he is still fearful and prefers just being close to her for company and within reach of her. We are hopeful as his confidence and trust grows; he will one day outgrow any fears of touch that he currently has. Likes & Dislikes: Avery LOVES mealtime and he will eat out of his foster’s hand and take treats gently. He loves to lay in the sun if his person is with him. Should you get up and walk away, Avery will follow right along and be your little shadow. A "dislike" for Avery is being confined to a space. Training: Avery is housetrained when let outside on a regular schedule. In fact, he will let you know when he must go outside. He is still working on his basic manners and is not a fan of car rides. Everything is still scary for Avery, so he is working on learning that people, places and things can be okay. Avery’s foster has been working very hard at making him comfortable with the leash and progress has been made. His new human will need to continue working with him, so the leash becomes his friend. Avery is very sensitive and if you try to correct him, he will lay down away from everything for hours. “Slow and steady” will need to be the motto as his new human continues working with him to build confidence and make him more comfortable. Medical: Avery is a healthy pup and will just require monthly heartworm and flea prevention, like any other pup. Other Animals: Avery would be okay in a home with other calm and laid-back dogs. He does enjoy playing with the dogs in his foster home and is learning from them how to be a dog. He seems to only allow his foster to pet him when the dogs are not in the room. He has not been tested with cats in her foster home, but we feel he would be okay with them. Children: Avery is extremely nervous around children, so a home without children will be required. Home: Avery will require a single-family home with a fenced yard. This is due to his barking when his human leaves, as well as his nervousness on a leash (he spends his time trying to pull out of his collar/harness). He would benefit from being in a home where his new person is home more often than not. Avery has free reign of his foster’s home, and he has not had any issues with chewing or destroying anything (except dog toys of course). He does get anxious when his foster leaves and will cry and bark until they return. When the foster returns, Avery will squeal, jump up, get the zoomies and even give an occasional lick on the foot or leg. He has been sleeping at the foot of the “big person” part of the night and will also sleep in his own bed. Grooming: Awesome Avery will need regular brushing and nail trimming. His foster was happy to report that she was able to brush him recently for about 30 minutes. He was nervous at first, but in the last 10 minutes, he seemed to enjoy it and even laid down and closed his eyes. Nail trims may initially need to be done at the veterinarian as he works through his nervousness. Overall: If you are looking for a sweet boy who could quickly become your shadow, and you are willing to offer love, patience and understanding, Avery may be the one for you. His adoption donation is $375.##1998067##Adoption processAdoption application is required and references will be checked. Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
