JJ is a sweet, lovable dog and his number one interest is being with his person. He just came to us last week so we are still in the process of getting to know him. Our rescue assists terminally ill people with finding new families for their pets, including those who are going into assisted living, nursing homes, and hospice. JJ's owner has health issues that left her unable to continue for his care, so we took him into our rescue. We are a rescue that believes in full disclosure so we can tell you what we know about him so far so you can decide if he is the right fit for you. He is a super sweet, curious guy, who, at age 7, is full of spunk, and we would love to see him a home where he gets to go on walks and explore new settings. He is still young and learning new things about the world. His owner said that he gets matted easily, so he is brushed with a soft brush daily and receives regular grooming at a groomer. He likes to chew things still so any small items he could get into in a home should be picked up off the floor. He does have a few favorite toys that he likes to play with as well, that he hasn't chewed. This isn't a dog ready for retirement, this is a dog that could easily live another 7 or 8 years and wants to be active and has his daily zoomies where his people chase him around as he play bows, and he is fast! He is 10 pounds. He does have allergies - possibly to chicken, and because of this, he is on a daily prescription allergy medication called Apoquel (depending on your vet, around $60 a month). We would encourage an adopter to further explore his allergy issues to determine what the best diet may be for him. Our vet is recommending a sensitive skin and stomach food. One sign of his allergy is his itchy butt, and he has been diagnosed with anal gland infections in the past. Currently, he requires a vet visit every two months to express his anal glands. He will need to be on an over-the-counter supplement called Glandex to assist with anal glands. We also got him a cytopoint injection at the vet that will help with his itchiness and lasts for a month. Although he has never lived with other dogs, he is friendly with other dogs. His owner has expressed that ideally she would love for him to be the only dog because he is used to being the center of attention and getting a lot of cuddles, but it doesn't mean he can't live with other dogs. He just met a cat for the first time last week and has maintained a cautious distance from the cat, though he is intrigued by the meowing sound. He is used to sleeping in bed next to his person, and this is pretty much a non-negotiable with him. He will bark unhappily if left on the floor. Because of his owner's health, he has been trained to go to the bathroom on a pee pad, but he will also go potty outside if given the opportunity. He will need an owner willing to take the time and patience to help him brush up on his pottying outside skills. including learning to give cues when he needs to go outside. He has also never learned to navigate stairs so this will take a little time for him to acclimate, but he is easy to pick up if needed as well. For his safety, stairs should be inaccessible until he learns how to go up and down them safely. Overall, he is a super sweet, loving guy that just wants to find his people again and be the center of their world. He is used to having someone home with him most of the time so an active retired person or someone who works from home would be ideal. We do collect applications and choose the best fit. Given his breed mix and friendly, youthful nature, we expect we will receive a lot of well-qualified applicants.
