My name is Raider, but the only thing I'll steal is your heart. I'm a sweet, affectionate 5-year-old 17-lb. rat terrier boy, who loves to give kisses once I warm up to you. One of my favorite things is cuddling under a blanket with you. I'm also skilled at standing and walking on my hind legs! I like tennis balls and stuffed toys. My house-training is impeccable, and I know 'sit.'I'm in rescue through no fault of my own; my owners got divorced, and I couldn't move with either of them. I often feel uneasy around new people, new environments, and on car rides. However, my foster parents have been helping me by exposing me slowly to new people and places. I'm also working on being less nervous around cars and loud noises (which are very scary to me) on my walks. Sudden, unpredictable movements, being grabbed at or picked up unexpectedly, and having things I shouldn't have (like snack wrappers) taken away can make me react with a bite. For these reasons, I can't to go to a home with children. I need a confident, patient adopter who will guide and reassure me. I'll be a good student because I'm food-motivated when I'm not feeling scared. And although I haven't yet learned how to play with other dogs, another dog who is friendly and laid-back would benefit me greatly. I get along with my doggy foster siblings, and they help to put me at ease. I haven't been around many cats, but those I've met seem OK. Interested applicants should live near Ferndale, Michigan, to meet me and give me some time to get to know you. Since I'm a good guard dog that will alert you to strange sounds outside, I probably shouldn't live in an apartment where others may not appreciate my vocal alerts.
