Truman Australian Shepherd Senior Male
Truman is in need of a medical foster. He's currently being fostered in Bradenton, FL (Manatee County).Truman has a truly sad story. He was a chain dog most of his life, and was found at an abandoned home. When we rescued him he was grossly underweight and so matted he had to have a medical shave. He has such a precious personality, it is almost magical. He acts like there is nothing wrong and he has probably accepted his past lot in life with joy. He wags his tail all the time. He really doesn't know sit or down, he does come when called. He is low energy, meanders around the house and the yard. He has had all his shots, and when he was stable we neutered him. A few things we found out: he is heart worm positive and needs treatment. That is priority now. He also has bilateral ACL issues. He could possibly benefit from an orthopedic surgery but the heart worm treatment needs to be done 1st. He is currently on a medication called Galliprant, which is like Rimadyl, and it works for him. He needs it daily, and it allows him to sometimes run and play with other dogs. Without it he is in a lot of pain. Once his heart worm treatment is done we will have his knees checked out by a specialist. Truman is good natured, he spends a lot of time in his crate (open door policy). He plays usually in the mornings with other dogs, and it is shortlived play. He gets along with most of the dogs in his current foster home, big and small, his favorite pal is a Boxer mixture. He loves to be pet, tolerates ear care, nails, and eye care. He has had a bad yeast infection, and we do bi-monthly ear washes for him. Monthly medicated baths are also helpful for him.His teeth are worn down, his eyes are clear. His hair is growing back slowly. He is a love, and just rolls with whatever is happening at the time. He does mark in the house and his current foster hasnot been able to correct this behavior, so he wears a disposable diaper while inside..he does not mind at all, he just stands there and wags his tail, He has a habit of collecting towels, paper and shoes and arranging them in his crate like a little hoarder. Perhaps a remnant of when he had nothing to play with except maybe garbage. He does play with toys by himself and not with other dogs. He gets excited when he sees the leash and walks ok on lead. Car rides are okay too, and he does well at the vets office. He has shown that he is a protector of the home turf by barking when strangers come up. He likes to explore the nice outdoors, but has shown no inclination to jump. Likes to barks at the cattle next door. He is a gentle soul that is ready for some new experiences. Truman has come a long way since we got him a few months ago, he weighs about 38 pounds and has a few more to gain (ideally he'll be around 45 pounds). He is ready for a new foster home where he can complete his heart worm treatment. We are a foster-based rescue organization with foster homes throughout the state of Florida. We predominantly save dogs from municipal shelters throughout the Southeastern U.S. Our rescue dogs live in foster homes - there is no central facility.
