We have had Chef for a LONG time. He has had quite a few ups and downs since he joined us months ago now, but we’re so happy to say he has completed a board and train program and knows what is expected of him now. He will need continued work from a dedicated adopter, but this board and train program has laid the groundwork for him to be very successful in a forever home! Chef originally landed on the euthanasia list for displaying unpredictable behavior in the shelter – which is not altogether uncommon. He did not have a bite record and seemed like a normal, energetic husky when we pulled him and placed him in a foster home. He unfortunately showed some reactive behavior in his first foster home and was involved in two separate bite instances. He was then moved to another foster home with one of our most experienced fosters. He settled in easily and has not had any other incidents. He is a great dog, full of personality and a true husky through and through. Chef has a lot of energy and loves to play with other dogs in the home and at the park. He has made a ton of progress in learning what boundaries are. He used to give what his foster called “mouth-hugs,” being very mouthy in a friendly way but has since learned that’s not really ok with humans and just licks to show affection. He also enjoys playing with the hose and loves going for walks. In training he has learned so many important things beyond boundaries! He walks well on a leash, goes to his place, pays attention to people and respects direction. He has had some issues with potty training and marking inside the home, but he has come a long way and should continue to improve with consistency and patience. He has shown some destructive behavior if left to his own devices, but he does well in a crate if he needs to be unsupervised. He responds well to re-direction with treats when he gets too excited or jumps on people. He may still try to see what he can get away with in the future, but we will absolutely be sharing direction on the best way to be successful with this boy in the future with his adopter (his high food drive will certainly help)! He has not been around small children, only those 10+. Because he has a bite record, we will not be adopting him to a home with children, or with someone who plans to have children in the near future. He would make a great companion for a young, active adult or couple and would do especially well in a home with another playful dog or two.
