Shadow was a stray when my wife saw him during an evening walk. She brought me to where he was, and he quickly warmed up to us and followed us home. We had a mind to keep him, as he was a good with our young daughter (under 1); however, once our twins were born we have found there's no time to give him the attention or training he needs. Our local animal shelter has indicated they cannot take any more, and other nearby rescues have stated he'll most likely be put down immediately if he's turned in. He is a loyal and protective dog, and I've felt my family was well protected with him around. However, while he is protective of the family, he is also quite cautious with new people, requiring the person he views as the leader (currently me) to introduce that person with treats. He is also somewhat protective of his food around everyone but the leader. This can be corrected with the necessary & proper training he needs. He would be a great protector and guard dog, with training.
