Adopt Kelly a Tan/Yellow/Fawn American Pit Bull Terrier dog in Philadelphia

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Description:

Kelly is a sweet but sassy girl that is looking for someone to share her life with. Want to go for a walk? Want to stay in and watch movies? As long as you are by her side, she is happy. She gets nervous if you are not and will howl or cry until you are back. She is interested in playing with our dogs, but likes to be the boss, and will steal toys or hump, so we have to monitor interactions. She would do best in a house with other dogs willing to follow her lead. We also have cats that she ignores unless they start running, then she will chase and bark. No destructive behavior. Is scared of loud noises, including toys with squeakers. House broken. Has a little FOMO if things are going on in other parts of the house and likes to investigate. Sweet senior girl Kelly is an 8 year old mixed breed that came into the shelter in November of 2023. Although a lot of her history is unknown, the shelter staff could instantly tell what a gentle old soul she was. On 12/25 a volunteer said this about Kelly:"Took Kelly out for a walk and she was so calm. Hardly pulls on the leash and loves to sniff around. She is also very food motivated and will sit when you pulls out a treat. Loved it when she rolls in the grass, such a sweet and goofie girl! " On 12/26 staff said this:"Kelly is used as a gentle greeter in playgroup. She has really opened up since she started going and now seems to really enjoy spending some time outside. When she gets tired of playing, she usually hangs out in the yard and gets some good sniffs in On 12/27 staff said this about Kelly:"Great dog to do dog meets with! "Kelly was a rockstar at playgroup today as usual. She was the greeter/helper dog and stayed in the group the entire time. She was perfectly behaved, matched everyone's energy and did her own thing when no one was playing with her. On 12/28, Kelly ended up going to a foster home where she displayed some separation anxiety when left alone. Her fosters said "Kelly is settling in her new foster home. She is a very sweet girl. Loves to cuddle, being pet and loves being brushed. She is housebroken. She understands the word NO. She listens to commands. She knows sit and sometimes come. Has some separation anxiety, but that's to be expected. We're working on that. Eventually, Kelly's fosters decided that her separation anxiety was too much for them to handle on their own, and made the ultimate decision to return Kelly to the shelter on 1/13. They had these things to say about her: "Kelly has many wonderful qualities. We feel she would be fine if she were the only dog in the house. We have left her for a few hours at a time and although she barks and cries, she has displayed no destructive behavior. No scratching on the door, no chewing. She sleeps thru the night. No issues at all. She is completely housebroken. Not one accident. Knows to go to the door when she needs to go to the bathroom. She is very affectionate. A real snuggle bunny.Kelly went to a second foster home on 1/14 and was there for one night. They said that her separation anxiety had gotten severe, and it would be too much for them to handle. Her second foster said:"Last night we left Kelly in a room alone for an hour while we had to run out. She was left with a peanut butter kong and busy bone. She barked the entire time we were gone and also had diarrhea in the room. She doesn't seem to like being behind a closed door, which is a necessity with another dog in the house. Even when my husband left the room to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, she barked and got stressed all over again Poor Kelly has some clear abandonment issues and needs an adopter or rescue that is willing to work with her on her separation anxiety. We don't know who left her in the past, but being bounced around to different homes and back to the shelter definitely could have increased her stress and associated behaviors. Kelly needs some stability and a set schedule, so that she learns her humans aren't always going to abandon her. Kelly needs a place where she can live out her golden years and not have to worry anymore.
