Adopt Papi a White American Pit Bull Terrier dog in Philadelphia, PA (41459028)

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Description:

**$250 in pledges for the rescue that pulls** Papi ACCT-A-164348 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Papi must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER OR EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by Tuesday, May 28th by 10:00 am. Should Papi's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging an animal. Papi, a 2 year old male pittie mix, came into ACCT as a stray on May 14th, 2024. During his initial exam we noticed he was fairly underweight and had a small lump on his head but was otherwise friendly and tolerant of handling. This pup is gentle with taking treats and leans in for pets and love! He is easy to leash and remove from his kennel but needs some coaxing when returning back. Papi was later examined for the lump on his head as it ruptured on May 18th; during the exam our medical staff gave him some antibiotics and stress medication to help his healing. We have had several good dog meets with Papi and he can be seen wagging and play bowing to the other pups. During the dog meets, he is often vocal and forward to the other dogs. Over the time of Papi's stay here, he has grown increasingly stressed in the shelter environment. Most recently he was showing mouthy behavior and leash/clothing biting at staff and volunteers while walking through the kennels. He will benefit from a rescue that can give him time to decompress and show his true sweet self! NOTES: On 5/25 Staff noted: Got called to help with Papi's PCR test today. Papi has changed a lot since he arrived here. When I approached his kennel he excitedly barked at me, but as I went to open his door he began mouthing hard at my fingers through the bars. As soon as I reached my hand in with the leash he was mouthing and nipping hard at my fingers and the leash. I closed the door and tried to reach in higher, so he couldn't reach my hands, and he jumped up at them as I tried to leash him. It took a couple tries, but I was able to get him leashed and out, and he mouthed at my PPE gown and pants as we walked to the exam room. He was wiggly and aroused during his PCR but tolerated it well. He tried to pancake when going back but I used some momentum to get him to continue into the kennel. When he got into the kennel he turned around quickly but did not mouth at me again, although I thought he was going to in the moment. On 5/20 staff noted: A volunteer had Papi at the end of the row and Papi was leaping up and snapping at their stomach. They had a short leash away from their body so that the dog could not reach them. Then saw the volunteer start walking towards the outside door with Papi and he began walking normally. When they passed another staff member in the kennels, Papi jumped up and snapped at them. Then Papi saw a staff member coming in the side door with another dog and he began jumping up to snap at the volunteer handling him again. Then called staff to come out of the office but the volunteer had walked away and out the door with him. On 5/20 during a medical recheck exam staff noted: 2cm soft swelling on dorsal head with crust at previous draining site. Abscess on head - IMPROVING. Cleaned swelling with chlorhexidine solution and mild to moderate amount of red discharge expressed. Patient tolerated well. On 5/18 during a medical exam staff noted: Draining wound on head. A ruptured abscess, which is actively draining purulent discharge, is now apparent on left dorsal head. More diffuse cranial edema has improved since previous exam. Suspected blunt force head trauma (improving) w/ associated abscessed wound on left dorsal aspect of cranium. On 5/16 a volunteer noted: "Papi was leveled up to gold as he was doing lots of jumping, mouthing, and was pretty strong on leash. On 5/16 during a medical exam staff noted: "3cm focal spherical hard swelling on left dorsal head, diffusely swollen head overall (apparent around eyes and ears) - soft and sensitive to the touch. Staff also noted "Focal swelling with diffuse cranial swelling: r/o blunt trauma and associated soft tissue swelling vs. skull fracture vs. progressive hydrocephalus vs. other congenital vs. neoplasia (less likely in young patient) vs. other. Papi was hyper and energetic but allowed all handling. On 5/15 staff noted: "Such a sweetheart. He was extremely patient with leashing and excited to get outside. He was affectionate with multiple people, leaning in for pets, and hopping up on us giving kisses. He is unfortunately a bit stressed at this time and was whining and pawing at the play yard gate, so we put him back after not so long. On 5/15 during a medical exam staff noted: that Papi had a dirty coat, a firm small lump on his head and was underweight. Papi was noted to be bright, alert, responsive and friendly. On 5/14 staff noted: Easy to leash in kennel, sat at the door patiently with soft eyes and low wags. No issues exiting, needs some coaxing returning but still easy. Pulls minimally on leash. Papi was social in the room with both handlers and was wiggly and easy to handle. Leaned in for pets and would solicit attention often. Would whine when not paying attention to him and nudge you for pets. Well mannered for a young puppy and gentle with treats. remained loose when a new handler entered the room as well. Engages in play. Interested in toys but does not take possession.
