Adopt Available - Bristol a White - with Black English Setter / Mixed dog in

Location:
Havertown, PA
Description:

Socialization/training: Bristol knows Sit, Stay, Come, Inside, Outside, Get Some Pets,Treat, Cookie, No, Off, and Clean Up (her favorite - for dropped/spilled food ). She picks up commands easily! She bonded with me immediately but before coming to rescue, a man had beaten her with a pipe. Therefore, she needs gentle introductions to new people, especially men. Her initial reaction to men is a mixed bag. She warmed up to my adult son after a couple of hours, but is still fearful of one neighbor in particular and doesn’t want him near her. She met another male neighbor at the fence recently without issue. I think it will be beneficial for her to be introduced to as many new people and different settings as possible early on, so that becomes the norm, and before she settles in and considers the house her realm needing her protection. Since she wants to be protective of ‘her’ house, it is recommended that introductions be in a neutral outdoor setting. Bristol can be intimidated by other dogs at first but is figuring out that friends are fun! She isn’t an alpha; even the little Boston terrier on the other side of the fence had her spooked. When we brought a new dog into the house, though, I did have to mediate for an afternoon while she tried to establish her preferred pecking order. As soon as the new dog spoke up, she dialed it back. They now play together daily, which she really enjoys. Her play style is best suited to dogs closer to her size. The resident dog is 35 lbs and puts up with a lot of ‘ruff’-housing, but when he objects, Bristol listens! Crate trained: I’ve never needed to use a crate because Bristol is 100% reliable in the house alone, for at least up to six hours. The only things she has ever tried to chew on were a piece of cardboard that I left on the floor and a random shoe. She sleeps through the night without issue. Leash trained: Bristol will need additional training in this area. She has made great strides with leash walking, but she is strong and will still pull if she smells something interesting. I think she was allowed to roam previously because she has tried to chase every delivery truck that has passed us on our walks, and has even attempted to back out of her collar to do so. She now wears a martingale collar to prevent that from ever happening! Activity Level: Bristol’s activity level is low to medium for a setter. When she was the only dog in the house, she didn’t care to be outside for very long unless I was with her and her activity level was low. With the addition of another dog, she loves to run and play chase! We’ve tried playing fetch, but Bristol only considers that an opportunity to practice evasive maneuvers. She is calm indoors and is good to go with a couple of 20 minute walks a day, and she also enjoys mental stimulation from her snuffle mat. Fence: Bristol would be fine with leash walking only. My fence is 4’ chain link and she’s never tried to breach it. She did get out a couple of times when a gate wasn’t closed, but she stayed in the yard. I don’t know how she would do with an invisible fence. Behavior: Bristol is mostly calm and quiet in the house. She will bark if she sees a stranger outside, or if she hears dogs, doorbells, or knocking, including on the tv. She is allowed on one piece of furniture and she respects that rule. Bristol craves reassurance and affection and wants eye contact like no dog I’ve ever seen. She’ll sit next to you for pets and will give you a paw if you aren’t cooperating. She lets you know when she needs soothing by giving you both paws or a ‘hug’. She’s pretty independent and doesn’t feel the need to follow me everywhere right away. Bonus: she waits for you to get up before she gets up - but if you make eye contact, all bets are off. Bristol is eager to please and a quick learner. She is treat motivated. Medical History: Bristol was treated for both Lyme disease and Ehrlichiosis but depending on the test used may have positive results even after treatment. She had already had puppies and was spayed in our care. She’s otherwise a very healthy girl. She is UTD on vaccines, spayed, microchipped, and on monbthly heartworm prevention. Foster Comments: Bristol is so sweet and loving despite coming from an abusive situation. She will need a family who will give this deserving girl just a bit of extra time to acclimate and feel comfortable in her new surroundings. She's so resilient and eager to please. She would be fine as an only dog or as a sibling - she’s versatile! Bristol has made great strides in her foster home and has learned that life is good! Can you open your heart and home and give her the love and security she so richly deserves? Such a sweetheart, this one! Foster location: Raleigh, NC Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”). Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##1982926##
