Adopt ANGELINA a White - with Tan, Yellow or Fawn Australian Cattle Dog / Mixed

Location:
Kyle, TX
Description:

From Angelina's Foster about her: Angelina (Angie) is the sweetest, funniest, quirkiest pup we've ever fostered. However, she'll be very skittish and standoffish at first and maybe for a few weeks or months. She won't come to you, she'll shake, she'll curl up in a ball in the corner as if to say, "Please just stay away from me. Eventually she'll get a little curious and come around, but only briefly. This will continue for a while until one day she jumps up on the couch and you can tell she's thinking about cuddling, but she's not quite sure yet. Slowly, very slowly, she'll start to come around. Lots of treats help, head and belly rubs, walks, rides in the car, visits to coffee shops, etc. later you'll find her laying next to you with her head buried in your neck and you won't want to ever get up. To sum it up, she will require a great deal of patience to get over her skittishness, but your patience will be rewarded tremendously if you're willing to put in the time and effort. Here are some things about Angie that may help you and her in this transition: She's a very timid pup. There was very little interaction in the form of pets and snuggles the first few weeks. We let her set the tone. She took up primary residence in one corner of the house but we also had a large crate in the living room available at all times. In her crate we had a dog bed and covered it with a blanket on the sides and back. She seemed very comfortable in there. She wouldn't go in voluntarily in the beginning but she'll go anywhere you want once the leash is on. She has loved the three other dogs in the home. We have not encountered any issues with other dogs on walks, in public, etc. She plays very well with the other pups and really seems to enjoy playtime with them. Angie had some weight to lose when we first took her in. She was on a low cal kibble provided by the shelter. Since then she has transitioned to the food I provide my other dogs. I typically make their dog food which consists of a protein like lean turkey and chicken, mixed dog safe veggies and rice or potatoes. She isn't prone to upset stomachs but we did change food overnight once and she had a few accidents as a result. As did another one of my dogs. We feed her in the crate now because we have 3 other dogs. Putting her in the crate has only been to give her some peace when she eats, but there's been no aggression or resource guarding that we've seen. She'll be happy to eat anywhere, but at breakfast and dinner time she runs straight into the crate and waits for her food. So if she does that, you'll know where it came from. Angie takes two medicines in the morning. Because of her hips and knees, she's not going to be as active as healthy pups and is prone to gain weight, so she'll need a lot of walks to keep the weight off without causing leg issues. I just toss all three pills in her dog food in the morning and she gobbles it up. Angie does well on a leash. We use a martingale collar. When we take her out in public we harness her. Sometimes she pulls a little but I would imagine that is because she's always on a walk with two other dogs and she continues to get comfortable with her surroundings. She does scare very easily so we typically pull off to the side when large garbage trucks or school busses are heading our way. We've taken her on car rides as much as possible. She does well in the car and I recommend tethering her in the back seat with her harness on.
