This is Barley. Barley’s owner was an older man who passed away about 6 weeks ago. His neighbors found out that the man’s family abandoned Barley in the backyard by himself for 2 weeks, in storms and 90-degree heat, with only a tub of moldy food. Thankfully he dug a hole under a shed and was sheltering there as best he could. He ultimately saved himself by chewing a hole in his fence and went to the neighbor's front door, or they would’ve had no idea he was even still there. Sadly they already had 2 big dogs and their landlord would not allow a third, or they would definitely have kept him. For background, the neighbor believed he was at least 6 or 7 years old and neutered, but they did not know anything else about him. We took him to our vet where he was treated for a skin condition (believed be be caused by flea allergies), was thankfully heartworm negative, and deemed to be in good health other than being a bit chunky. They estimated him to be about 6 years old. Barley was adopted a month ago, but it turned out their other dog really did not want a friend. They told us that Barley is a wonderful, happy boy but their other dog was not happy -- so now this poor guy finds himself in need of a home again. Barley is the sweetest, calmest, gentlest boy, and he LOVES people and other dogs! He is mostly calm but still can be playful, walks well on a leash, and learns quickly. While we believe he probably would do well in most any home situation because of his great temperament, we feel like he would absolutely love to have his own man to bond with again -- maybe even a retiree who wants a companion to join him on outings, errands and spend evenings watching television together.
