Collie Mix Dog for Adoption in Santa Cruz, California, 95062 USNickname: LEON* Posted Breed: Collie / Mixed (medium coat). Leon is a medium sized adolescent male cattle/herding dog of unknown age (although estimated to be about 4-5 months old) who is currently in foster care. Leon came to the shelter with a traumatic hip injury, most likely after being hit by a car, which required invasive surgical treatment. So far, Leonâs injury and procedure are healing well and he is learning how to use his hind left leg in different ways. That being said, he is still able to run (albeit a bit differently) and play energetically. In terms of demeanor Leon is an absolute gem. He has demonstrated loads of affection toward the humans in his life as well as the other dogs in the foster home. Likewise, the resident dogs have taken Leon in with immediate effect and they have quickly established a bond. Much of this has to do with Leonâs respectful approach to other dogs (although not afraid to be the playful and annoying little brother once the comfort level rises). Leon is still learning how to be house-trained as he was taught to use a puppy âpee padâ, but his intelligence and eagerness to interact should aid the transition. Leon is also still learning how to walk on the leash and although he generally does fine, a MAJOR challenge will be getting him to overcome his fear of cars. Because of his traumatic injury, he his overwhelmingly afraid of cars, and he often freezes or hides behind the walker when a moving car is nearby. That being said he is great riding inside a car, although he has been carsick on a few occasions. Because Leon is still in the young-dog teething stage, care will need to be taken to ensure he doesnât chew on the wrong things. He is excellent however at focusing mostly on his toys and if he has a lot of toy options he usually chooses them. Redirecting his from the prohibited item to the toy is also very easy. Care should also be taken as young dogs generally can be unintentionally âmouthyâ around small children. Overall, Leon is a loving, intelligent, happy dog with a sweet disposition who thrives on his interactions with those in the household. He would greatly benefit from another older confident dog in the house who wants a friend/protégé. His human companion must also be willing to take the extra care required of his orthopedic condition and devote time to this lovely guy given his age.
