In May 2017, we were notified that an abandoned dog had been hit and left to die on the side of the road. Miraculously, he had managed to drag himself into the woman's yard and she immediately reached out to us. The dog was in terrible shape. His skin was torn, his body emaciated and he had lived through horrors none of us could begin to imagine, as he showed all the signs of having been a bait dog. We rushed him to the emergency vet hospital where our suspicions were confirmed. This young dog had lived a life of unimaginable pain prior to being dumped and hit by a truck. The vets cleaned and stitched his wounds; some so gaping, they had to be surgically repaired. Many old wounds in varying stages of healing were also attended to. The dog was quiet and grateful; it was probably the first time his wounds had ever been cleaned -- it was no doubt the first time he experienced such kindness. We named him Goliath. Goliath healed and went to a wonderful foster home, where he had other dogs to play with, a pool to swim in and the home life he never knew was possible. The horrors of his past didn't influence his new future -- he was living and loving every minute. Goliath then went to another foster -- a man who loved him more than words could say, and he was adopted. He had a good life and was very much loved by his dad. He was home. But alas, Goliath's happy days were short-lived when his dad was killed in a motorcycle accident. We can't even imagine what poor Goliath was feeling. The person he had bonded with and loved left and never came back. The family said they would keep him but later decided not to and now he is back with us. Goliath is now a little older but still a happy, sweet, loving dog. He has settled into the boarding facility where he is getting a lot of attention from our awesome volunteers. We have no doubts he misses his dad and the home he once had. We hope that Goliath, this dog who has already been through so much in his life, will have another home soon, where he will once again know he is loved and will be so for the rest of his days.
